Access to Emergency Funds

The Canada Emergency Response Benefit is available to support Canadians through this really challenging time. Here are some things you might find useful:

You can apply if: you reside in Canada, are 15 years of age or older, did not quit your job voluntarily, earned $1000 or less before taxes in the 14 consecutive days prior to the application period, and you stopped work due to COVID -19. Eligibility periods begin 15 March and you must reapply each month (4-week periods). You can receive $2000 per month; this money is taxable and must be reported on your 2020 Income Tax Return.

This benefit is available until 3 October and must be applied for before 2 December 2020. if you have been terminated, laid off or face a reduction in work hours; are sick, quarantined, in self isolation or taking care of someone who is sick with COVID-19. Or you are working parents who must stay home without pay to care for children due to illness or school/daycare closures.

Even if you were not eligible for GST/HST credit, but have filed your 2018 tax return, you may also get a one-time credit amount. The Province of Ontario is doubling the Guaranteed Annual Income System payment for low income seniors for 6 months. Expanding access to the emergency assistance program administered by Ontario Works. For families with children (0-12 years) will receive $200 per child. You need to apply for this benefit through the Ontario.ca website.
