Our Mascot: “Forgotten”

The Hamilton and District Injured Workers Group proudly uses a sculpture made by Mark Checkley as our logo. With his hands as his only tools, the artist sculpted this statue from cement. Dedicated to injured workers everywhere, the sculpture manifests not only the obvious injuries workers are apt to suffer, but the invisible wounds as well. The absence of gender or race indicates that workplace injuries can happen to anyone. The grey colour of the artist’s chosen medium is an indication of the limbo that most former workers find themselves in. The lack of mouth or ears symbolizes that workers have no voice, and are, therefore, not heard.

My heart is in that sculpture
